Coffee is a staple beverage in many countries and globally popular thanks to the stimulant effect of its caffeine content. There are different variations of this brewed drink, with each of them defined by a unique method of preparation and presentation. However, unlike espresso and cafe latte, kosher coffee is not a sub-type with a particular preparation method. Rather, it is the ingredients used in preparing coffee that determines whether it is kosher or not.

What Makes Coffee Kosher?
Coffee beans are inherently kosher. However, they go through various steps during processing and preparation that can introduce non-kosher additives into the final product. Turning the coffee beans into a drinkable beverage takes five general steps: roasting, brewing, decaffeination, drying and flavoring. Roasting turns coffee beans brown and gives them the signature coffee flavor while brewing ground coffee pulls this flavor into the water. Both steps meet the requirements of Jewish dietary laws or kashrut.

Concerns about kosher with regards to coffee arise during decaffeination, drying, and flavoring. The process of decaffeination requires solvents, like ethyl alcohol or grain alcohol, obtained through fermentation. Decaffeinated coffee with such solvents is non-kosher. Similarly, coffee prepared with a drying process that involves maltodextrin does not meet kashrut standards. Kosher regulations about coffee flavoring are more complicated for a couple of reasons. First, manufacturers can flavor coffee beans directly or flavor the filters used in their preparation. Similarly, coffee shops can serve unflavored coffee in flavored cups. Secondly, there is no legal requirement to state the constituents of natural and artificial coffee flavors. For this reason, it is important for religiously observant Jews to ensure that their flavored coffees carry kosher certification before consuming them.

Finding Kosher-Certified Coffee
While many unflavored ground coffees are kosher, decaffeinated and instant coffee as well as single-serve coffees like Keurig K-Cup pods require kosher certification. To find out whether a coffee product carries kosher certification, look for the OU or Star-K symbol on its packaging. The OU certification comes from the Kosher Division of the Orthodox Union and, like the Star-K Kosher Certification, it is one of the most prominent kosher certification agencies in the US.

While it is easy to look out for the OU or Star-K symbol of kosher certification when ordering coffee online or buying it off the shelf, getting a truly kosher cup of coffee from coffee shops and vending machines can be daunting. When buying flavored coffee from these sources, make sure it comes in a paper cup to avoid the non-kosher zinc stearate found in most Styrofoam cups. Secondly, only order flavored coffee from a shop with a coffee maker used solely for kosher-certified beans. Also, make sure the syrup used in flavoring the coffee meets kashrut regulations.

Ordering Kosher Coffee Online
Just about every major coffee brand carries many kosher-certified coffee beans. This means that you can find your favorite blend of Keurig K-Cups, ground beans or soluble coffee sticks from brands such as Keurig and Folgers when ordering coffee online. These are available in different blends and strengths and as decaffeinated and regular caffeinated coffee.
