Parents have never had as many options for different types of diapers as they do today. Staples carries top brands, such as Medline, to help parents sort through all the options and make the right choice for their family.

Reusable vs. Disposable Diapers
One of the first decisions a parent has to make is between reusable and disposable diapers. Chances are, you will have to try a few different styles to find the right fit for you and your child.

Disposable diapers are conveniently purchased in bulk and thrown away when done. Invented in the 1950's, they now make up 95 percent of diapers used today. They come in a variety of sizes, styles, absorbency levels and patterns. The majority use tape as fasteners to keep them in place, a common issue is that this tape can rip off when in a hurry. Reusable options, traditionally made of cotton cloth, require laundering after use. They have many fastening choices: the standard pin method, the all-in-one (very similar to disposable) and cloth liners that work with a diaper cover. Both versions are available pre-folded for easy storage and have comparable absorbency levels.

Choosing a Diaper Size and Fit
Babies come in all different shapes, sizes and lengths, and that can make determining what size to buy a difficult task. The most important consideration in size is the weight of the baby as some may be larger or smaller than average for children of their age. Once you've picked the right size, you now need to examine the fit. Make sure the diaper fits in a symmetrical way, both back and front and on each side, then check for any gaps. Even if there are no visible gaps, consistent leaking and red marks on the baby's skin are also indicators of a poor fit. Medline and other quality brands offer numerous styles and sizes to make choosing the right one an easy task.

Is There a More Eco-friendly Type of Diaper?
Most people think that reusable options are the most eco-friendly, but that isn't necessarily true. While disposables create 3.4 million tons of waste in landfill every year, reusables have to figure in the cost and carbon footprint of machine washing and drying (or line drying). The carbon footprint increases even more if they are picked up and laundered elsewhere.

Should you Bring Diapers to a Baby Shower as a Gift?
It may sound like a good idea, but parents are advised to buy them in small batches in the beginning so they can figure out what size and style will work for their child. Those given as a gift may not be used at all. Hypo-allergenic or fragrance-free lotions and wipes may be a better gift.

How Many Diapers Will you use in a Week?
The answer varies depending on the age and health of the child. You should keep track of your baby's regular rhythm to not only determine the amount you'll need for the following week but also if there are hydration or elimination issues. In a week, children can use between 40-85 on average between birth and 12 months of age.
