A threadlock is an adhesive liquid that fills all voids, uniting the bolt and nut and creating material closure while also maintaining friction by adhesion. Threaded fasteners such as nuts and bolts are a big part of mechanical design as environmental activism pushes for the importance of disassembly and recycling. Threaded fasteners still fail due to tension relaxation caused by temperature changes or self-loosening.  To correct this issue, one can use threadlockers. These adhesives dynamically address the wide array of issues involved in fastenings, such as longevity, resilience, material, and joint type. Browse the wide selection of threadlocks at Staples in the office supplies section.

Types of threadlocks
The strength and viscosity required for an application relate directly to the size of the fastener used. High-strength thread sealants are suitable for fasteners, which are up to 1 inch in diameter commonly found in heavy equipment in permanent assembly applications. Medium-strength threadlocks are for fasteners about 0.75 inch in diameter used in machine tools and presses, pumps, and compressors. Low-strength thread sealants are ideal for screws up to a 0.25 inch in diameter, which are typically common in adjustment and calibration screws, meters, gauges, among other fasteners.

Convenience of use
Threadlocks are easy to apply as they come in one of two physical forms, liquids or semisolid sticks. The liquids include both wicking and nonwicking sealants. It's important to note that wicking sealants have low viscosity and flow easily between threads in fasteners. For the best result, one should apply them before connecting the parts. Semisolid sticks are nonwicking adhesives that do run or drip, making them more portable without stains or spills. Like wicking adhesives, you should apply it directly to the exposed threads.

Strength and holding abilities
Low-strength formulations in threadlocks are important for easy removal, while medium-strength formulations are removable using common hand tools. High-strength formulations have higher holding abilities.

How do threadlockers work?
Apart from preventing movement, thread sealants block moisture, gasses, and corrosive fluids from getting into the crevices. This helps extend joint life. Using threadlockers reduces assembly costs since it allows engineers to use standard bolts in the place of complex locking systems. Liquid adhesives also work for most bolt sizes and diameters, reducing the calculations in mechanical fasteners.

What factors do you consider when selecting threadlocks?
There are several factors to consider when selecting the type of threadlocking adhesive to use. In some instances, bolts need to be removable and reusable to ease equipment maintenance and repair. This is a unique feature among adhesives that are easy to remove and reapply to enable the use of previously locked bolts. Material plays a key role in the type and performance of the threadlocking adhesive. Inactive metals need a primer that acts as a cure; however, if the joint has only one inactive metal in its joint, no primer is necessary.

Are threadlockers reusable?
For those working in repair and maintenance, threadlockers adhesive remains ideal. One advantage of threadlocks is its reusability, especially with bolts that are frequently disassembled and reused. Adhesives come with torque levels that range between low, which is easy to disassemble using contemporary tools, to high, which is challenging to disassemble.
