True Temper Hoes

Hoes are extremely useful for a variety of gardening and yard tasks. When you are looking for reliable tools manufactured in the United States, the True Temper brand is an excellent choice. Staples carries numerous high-quality hoes, rakes, shovels and other gardening implements for various outdoor maintenance tasks.

What Are Gardening Hoes?
A garden hoe consists of a long handle with a flat blade at the end, generally set at approximately a right angle to the handle. Hoeing helps break up dry or hard dirt, unearth stones and aerate the soil in preparation for planting. Gardening hoes are also useful for removing weeds quickly and efficiently. Using a hoe is not only faster than weeding by hand, but also destroys seedlings that aren't yet above the ground.

True Temper hoes are designed to last for years. Every blade is created from solid steel for strength and durability. The blade is slightly thicker around the middle for additional strength and has a sharpened end for cutting through tough soil. Some blades are serrated along the edge for more effective, though less clean, cuts. Wood and fiberglass are the most common handle materials, and each type has specific advantages. Fiberglass handles usually last longer than wood and aren't susceptible to rot, warping or water damage. If you want the ability to modify the handle for a custom grip or replace it when necessary, a wood handle is a smart choice.

What Tasks Require Hoes?
The most common task for a hoe is weeding. In general, weeding should be completed on a regular schedule, allowing the hoe to kill small weeds before they break through the soil surface. It's better to hoe when the soil is dry, as there is a smaller chance of weeds re-seeding immediately in wet soil.

Hoeing is also very effective in a vegetable garden. Planting vegetables in straight, organized lines makes maintenance easy and can increase the yield. Separate rows enough to allow access between each one for weeding and harvesting. Use a hoe to create lines for planting seeds and then keep weeds under control by hoeing between the lines.

How Should Hoes Be Used and Maintained?
To hoe correctly, stand as upright as possible to prevent strain on the back. Cut the hoe blade into the soil and drag it toward yourself, destroying the weeds at the roots. The ideal depth for the blade is around 3/4 of an inch below the surface. It the blade is too shallow, it may not kill the entire root system.

Maintaining hoes and other gardening tools ensures they will last a long time. After each use, clean off all the dirt and ensure the blade and handle are completely dry. Storing tools inside a garage or shed protects them from the weather. Hang hoes off the ground to prevent any moisture transfer. When wooden handles need conditioning, simply rub them with a thin layer of linseed oil. Staples has a wide selection of hoes and other equipment for a well-maintained garden.
