USB cables have become an everyday tool for connecting various devices to either power or transfer data. While most of these cables have the same use and function, there are some key differences and advantages associated with specific models. USB cables work with computers, mobile phones, printers, and gadgets like speakers and external storage. There are cables of different lengths and widths and some with multiple pins. Browse through computer accessories at Staples for quality USB cables.

Types of USB Cables
Most USB cables are universal, especially the end that links to a computer port. However, the connectors are different, depending on the role they play. A USB cable connector varies from one brand to another or even from one type of gadget to another.

The most common types of USB cables are those with Type-A and Type-B connectors. Type-A is very common and connects PCs, laptops, and tablets to smartphones, cameras, and keyboards. Type-B has a square end and is mostly used to connect printers and scanners. Other types include the microUSB, adopted by most smartphones and tablets brands except for Apple. USB-C is a type of microUSB. The uniqueness of this type is that it has a faster data transfer rate and can connect while facing up or down.

Considerations when buying a USB cable
The amount of power a cable uses, the data transfer speed, and the connector ends are key considerations. There are longer cables that help operate gadgets from a distance. Others come with multiple connectors for different gadgets. The longer the cable, the slower it is in transferring data. USB cables also have different widths. The thicker the cable, the less the resistance it generates, thus the better transfer of data compared to slender cables.

It's also important to consider the material that makes a cable. A good material should be water-resistant and not easy to break. PVC casing material is not flammable and is resistant to various weather conditions, making it a good choice. Other materials commonly used are nylon and thermoplastic elastomers (TPE).

Are MicroUSB and USB-C the same?
With technological advancements, manufacturers have found the need to standardize devices. This has given rise to USB-C, which is an improved version of the microUSB. The former fits easily in USB ports on both sides of the connector and can charge a wide variety of devices, unlike the microUSB.

Do all USB cables use the same power?
Most mobile devices will require an input of 1 Amp (A) of power per USB port. This, however, is different in a tablet that requires a port of 2A. There are high-power ports of up to 5A, which charge devices faster and are ideal for most types of electronic devices.

Are there differences between a USB charging cable and a USB data cable?
Both charging and data cables use a USB interface. However, there are cables that are charge only, while others are strictly for the transfer of data. Some do both tasks. Inside the USB cable are different wires, with some for carrying data and some for power. A strictly charging USB cable only has power wires.
