Propylene strapping is a type of plastic packaging material for bundling, fastening, stabilizing, and combining items meant for storage and shipping. Also called poly strapping, it is more affordable and lighter than steel strapping. Propylene packaging straps stretch out easily and are ideal for light to medium-duty applications. Staples® carries a wide selection of propylene banding as well as a large inventory of shipping supplies for businesses and home users.

Choose the Right Propylene Strapping for Your Package
Strapping comes in different sizes, and the one to pick depends on the size, weight, and shape of the item being packaged. When shopping for plastic straps, consider their widths and lengths. The standard width for propylene straps is 0.5 inches but there are narrower ones measuring 0.25 inches across. Propylene rolls are available in lengths of 4400 to 9900 feet.

Thickness is also an important feature to consider. Thin straps are good for individual items and small cartons, while palletized loads usually require thicker ones. Poly strapping thickness mostly falls between 0.01 and 0.04 inches. Manufacturers usually supply propylene straps wrapped around cardboard cores and plastic reels. If using a strapping tool or machine to package items, make sure to pay attention to core sizes and select units that will fit the equipment used.

Consider Break Strength When Selecting Poly Strapping
It is important to find poly straps strong enough to hold packaged items and palletized loads. Note the break strengths of the strapping options on offer. Break strength is the amount of force required to break a strap. Expressed in pounds, this value usually has a direct relationship with package weight. When bundling non-boxed items, use a plastic strap with a rated break strength that is five times the combined weight of the items. A 1:3 weight-to-break strength ratio is best for goods in shipping boxes. For palletized loads, calculate break strength by multiplying the pallet weight by 1.5 and then dividing the result by the number of straps required.

Do You Need UV-Resistant Propylene Strapping?
Like all plastic products, propylene straps are prone to UV degradation over time. While packages in storage or protected during shipping do not require UV-resistant strapping, those left outside and exposed to the elements do. When UV-resistant straps are unavailable, get black propylene bands, as this color absorbs the least ultraviolet radiation.

What Is the Difference Between Hand and Machine Grade Strapping?
You can apply hand grade straps by hand as well as manual, pneumatic, and battery-powered tools. Machine grade pallet strapping requires semi-automatic and fully automatic arch machines. While some hand grade propylene bands may fit and work in automatic machines, they are unlikely to perform reliably and may end up costing more time and money.

What Are the Benefits of Embossed Strapping?
Embossed straps are thicker than smooth ones. While this does not translate to greater strength, it still confers some useful advantages. Embossing improves the flexibility of propylene straps as well as their split resistance and joint efficiency. Choose embossed straps for bulging loads that may expand after packaging.
