Frequently asked questions.

What is Staples® Battery Recycling Program?

Staples Battery Recycling Program offers customers a hassle-free way to recycle your rechargeable batteries that no longer hold a charge. Call2Recycle supports Staples collection of rechargeable batteries in store and helps ensure the materials in these batteries are safely and responsibly recycled into new materials and products.

What types of batteries are accepted?

Staples only accepts rechargeable Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Lithium Ion (Li-Ion), Small Sealed Lead Acid (SSLA/Pb), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), and Nickel Zinc (Ni-ZN) batteries that are 11 pounds or less. We do not accept automotive/wet-cell batteries or alkaline or lithium batteries. All collected batteries are recycled through our program with Call2Recycle.

How much does it cost to recycle my used batteries?

Rechargeable battery recycling is offered to Staples® customers for free at Staples stores.

Which stores accept batteries for recycling?

All Staples® stores in the U.S. accept rechargeable batteries for recycling except for specialty urban stores located in New York and DC. You can always contact your nearest Staples to confirm.

What happens to the batteries after I drop them off?

Accepted batteries are taken to recycling facilities to be broken down into separate metals which can be used in new products such as new batteries, stainless steel alloy and cement additive. Recycling reduces the need to mine for virgin material to manufacture these products.

Can I send in batteries online?

This free recycling program is only available in Staples® stores. Call2Recycle does offer several solutions for businesses that may generate larger amounts of batteries. Please visit the Call2Recycle site to explore their solutions for organizations.
