Naming a business

Q: I am about to start a pet grooming business and have been struggling with what to name it. I want something a little catchier than Diane's Pet Grooming. Do you have any tips for naming a business?

A: I like names that clearly convey what the business does. You could go for something clever like PetNation (ok, it's not THAT clever) and always insist it be followed with the tag line "Pet Grooming for Pets Who Think They're People."
You may find that many people bring their pets to you because they like YOU—your personality, the way you care for pets, or that your shop is in their neighborhood. In that case, having your name in the business name could be a very positive thing. Microsoft has spent billions to entice us to identify their software with Bill Gates. The Colonel was such a popular figure that KFC brought him back as a cartoon character. Being DIANE'S Pet Grooming may be the best thing you can do.
