Launching a law practice from a home office

Q: Any suggestions to "jump start" a law office specializing in estate planning and elder law? I want to work out of my home office initially.

A: If you are going to be working from home, the first thing you must do is find an office downtown that offers "executive suite" services and use it for your office address, and as a place to meet clients. You should also have your mail delivered there and use them to answer your phones. Clients usually won't hire a lawyer who works from home, so you need to offer clients a different, more "professional," image. The executive suite can do that, and it need not be expensive.
Next, buy an ad in the Yellow Pages. It will definitely bring in business because when potential clients need help, that is usually where they will first look. Also, consider a small ad in your local elder newspaper. Finally, I would consider putting on some free seminars both for the public, and in residential care facilities, explaining the law, the importance of trusts and living wills, etc., and then offering a free consultation. Good luck.
