Got any new business ideas?
Q: Where can I get ideas for a business? I have a lot of diverse skills and want to go into business for myself, but I need some ideas.
A: Begin with your passion. What do you love to do? Do you see other people making a living at it somehow? My friend Larry always wanted to go into business for himself and when he inherited $10,000, he decided to make the jump. He asked himself the questions you need to ask yourself:
- What makes me the happiest?
- If I could do anything, what would it be?
- Would I like to do that all day, everyday?
- What am I best at?
- What skills do I most like to use?
He answered by deciding that he had always loved electric trains the best. So he quit his job at Xerox and opened up a store that sold everything he could find that had to do with trains – electric trains, wooden trains, engineer hats, railroad–crossing signs, you name it. As odd as it might sound, he now has a store at a major mall, pays a huge rent, and makes a ton of money.
Look around. Do you know anyone who has a job you like? Do you see people doing things during the day that intrigue you? Take them out to lunch and interview them, even if you don't know them. People love to talk about themselves. Open up the Yellow Pages and see how many businesses have been developed around that thing you love.
Finally, check into some vocational counseling. Most colleges and employment agencies have vocational tests you can take to see what sorts of occupations match your skills and interests.
