Allergic to networking

Q: Everywhere I go people tell me to grow my business I have to network, network, network. I hate networking, thus my business is not growing. Any advice for those of us who cannot stand shaking hands and making small talk?

A: You are not alone. People who are naturally more extroverted do better in networking situations. If you're more introverted, it is still best not to forgo networking. Instead, find a group that is focused more on professional development than small talk. Join a group where your potential clients gather to listen to speakers and learn new skills. Some of the local Chambers of Commerce throughout the U.S. are outstanding in their programming. To find other good groups, ask your clients where they go. This will give you more ideas.

Additionally, like any small business owner, you need a multi–pronged marketing approach. Giving speeches, writing articles, direct mail, e–newsletters, and developing a highly niched advertising campaign can all be part of a successful marketing mix that will bring you clients— all without having to press the flesh for every new dollar of business that comes in the door.
