What's the latest in wireless networking?
Q: I'm thinking about networking the computers in my small office to share files and our broadband connection. I've been hearing a lot about a new wireless networking standard, but I see a lot of others on the market. Which one should I be getting?
A: Bless 'em, but the wireless networking industry sure doesn't make it easy for us.
There are four wireless options from which to choose:
- Wireless–B is the oldest, slowest standard and has the least range.
- Wireless–G, the most popular existing WiFi standard, is up to 5x faster than Wireless–B and has more range.
- Enhanced Wireless–G is up to 2x faster than Wireless–G and has more range.
- Wireless–N has recently released its draft version which promises to be 12x–15x faster than Wireless–G and has much more range.
- For most small office networking functions, such as sharing Word documents, spreadsheets, and even sizeable databases, Wireless–G equipment will do a yeoman's job. But if you're looking for the range to cover a large office or you frequently need to stream large images, audio or video files, it may be worth springing for Wireless–N gear.
Keep in mind that there are four major wireless vendors in the U.S. that each sell their own version of Wireless–G routers. Unfortunately, none of which are fully compatible with any other vendor's equipment.
