having used a canon digital rebel for some time I was a bit disappointed with this camera. Menu takes some time to get used to. Picture quality in bright light is often over exposed, low light is much better. The video with sound is great. I think relooking at other models would be wise.

I was confused at first at all the different ways you could access the same controls and functions - but you do get used to it with practice. It's a great camera and a great value - it replaced a Nikon Coolpix that I broke...and I was leary at first about buying a Canon...but I'm loving it and not missing my Nikon at all. Takes great pictures - settings are much easier to change than with the Nikon....

Canon's getting better and better
By blahdeblahblahVerified Purchaser from Butte, MT on 8/19/2008
Pros:
Big LCD Screen, Good battery life, Shorter lag time
Describe Yourself:
Hobbyist/Enthusiast
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This is my fourth digital Canon, and it's following the trend of lower prices with better performance. The most noticeable improvement to me is the reduction in lag time. Once the shutter button is half down and focused, the last click goes pretty quick. I like the larger LCD, and the auto-rotate feature. Battery life is significantly better as well. I'm a sports writer, and often use the camera for mugs or stills, but it's not much use for low-light fast-action shots. Great performance for the size.

This camera is clearly the best one out there for the average non-technical user. It is easy to set-up and operate and a blast to use. The large, bright LCD screen sets this camera apart from all of the others in it's class.

Now that these are last years models you can usually find a deal on them. Great camera and better than the new ones that Canon is replacing it with! (in my opinion)

Cons:
Low battery display
Best Uses:

Bottom Line:

I lost my previous camera just before a big family trip. The Canon was easy to use and took good photos. Controls, over all, are well designed, especially the zoom control right by the shutter release button. "Low battery" light comes on when the battery is low, but I have not found a way to check it before then. User manual is fair; most items are well explained, but some info is hard to find or missing.

Pocket Sized Camcorder. Excellent
By NateVerified Reviewer from USA on 7/18/2008
Pros:
Bright LCD, Comfortable Controls, Easy Setup, Easy to Keep Clean, Pocket Sized Camcorder, Short Lag Time, Strong Construction
Cons:
Zoom in Video mode poor
Best Uses:
Art, Documentary, Fun, Photojournalism, Travel
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I got this camera exclusively for it's fantastic Camcorder Video mode. And it has not disappointed. It's really a pocket sized Camcorder & a digital camera in one.

I don't find the quality a lot worse than the average camcorder using a Mini-DV tape format or Hi8. Certainly better than VHS, and all out of a pocket sized digital camera. It's even 30 FPS like video tape. You can record a full hour of video at once if you have a large enough memory chip at good quality. Camera also has a 60 FPS video mode, but it restricts your record time to a short clip (even better live action than a camcorder)
By the way, I worked in TV as a tech for 5 years. I've done a lot of camera work.

I'm able to take the camera everywhere I go and not carry a bulky video camera. I can live the moment and not have a larger video camera making it less enjoyable. I take the camera on amusement park rides and places a regular camcorder would be impracticable. I'm also recording live bands, excellent sound quality.

In addition, SD memory chips are inexpensive and like a digital camera, you can take all the videos you want to put them on dirt cheap blank DVDs. Video tapes cost far more. The files are digital, and ready for editing or placing on the Internet.

About the only thing i'd say they could have improved on is the digital Zoom feature which is grainy when in the video camera mode. I just get closer to my subject. Not a big deal.

If anyone knows of a digital camera or newer Canon with an even better Video Camera mode, reply back.
But i'm very impressed with this camera. Maybe one that does HDTV, but still a reasonable amount of record time?

Send family shots via email from time to time. Because of size, the camera fits in my purse!

Cons:

Best Uses:
Good for all around pics
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

A very good camera for the money and size. It's size is small enough that you can carry it around all the time. I don't miss not having a viewfinder as the LCD is large and visable even in the sunlight. The response time is very fast both the power up and shutter lag which is a plesant surprise for a camera this size. You can set the ISO to high when you need to take fast action pics and not worry about movement of the camera - it's like having an auto stablizer feature without the extra expense. And yes the pictures are quite sharp and color correct.
