I purchased the scanner for the purpose of archiving pictures. I could not get it to scan just the picture, it also scanned the area where negatives are inserted. It was frustrating to continually crop out all the extra.
The scanner would work great for larger size scan items.

We got this scanner because it was Vista compatible after we had to get new computer and all that was available was Vista (we preferred XP). With my old scanner (which was perfectly good except that it was not compatible), we could scan a picture, click on the picture and resize anyway we wanted. Don't seem to be able to do that with this...there are preselected sizes. Not very user friendly.

Setup does not follow normal windows plug and play. Had some trouble during first attempt at setup. Since this small problem the scanner has worked great. HP's websight was very helpful. They were aware of the problem and had patches online to fix it.

Cons:
Only scans 2 frames at a, Slow

Bottom Line:

it is cheap but very, very slow. Would only recommend it to someone needing a cheap one. Having to change film strip to get all pictures off it isn't good. Needs to come with a manual or customer needs to know where they can get one. Should be a faster way to scan must have some settings somwhere that I haven't found yet..

I use PaperPort, and previously used a Visioneer scanner which had a decent human interface, however it stopped working. When you tell PaperPort you want to scan, you have to wait 20 seconds for the HP window to come up and get itself ready, wait for it to scan a preview for you with totally the wrong area outlined automatically which you can barely read, correct that manually, click SCAN, SCAN/PROFILE, LOAD then click the profile you saved (for example, that you want it to default to B&W instead of 256 colors), then LOAD, than ACCEPT. It scans the image, sends it to PaperPort, THEN IT DISAPPEARS!! You must go through the ENTIRE process again for the next page!! [...]I'm going to try to return it ASAP!! Don't buy any HP scanner if it comes with this software, which I would think they all do!!

The scanner light is so bright it illuminates through a single page, and therefore makes a shadow on the scan due to the tray that holds film negatives showing from behind. Also, it puts a sparkle on photos I have tried to scan. That's probably because of the matte finish on the photo more than the scanner. It's a decent machine, but the photo software takes some trial and error. A little loud, and a little slow, but not bad. With this caveat I could recommend the HP Scanjet G3010 Photo Scanner.

This was something I will tell everyone I know not to buy. Just to let you know it is not because it is an HP prod. I already have and old HP printer and scanner and I love them both. I was a nurse and used HP equipment and it was great, that is why I bought the old pieces I have. Your new stuff, if this scanner is any thing to go by, is not worth putting your name on any of it. I have never seen a prod. this bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Scanning Fool
from Maine on 8/12/2007
Cons:
Debris under glass, Difficult Setup, Gouges in plastic frame
Describe Yourself:

The most annoying thing with this scanner is that anything you scan under 8x10 must be covered with a blank white piece of paper or the scan will reflect the slide holder in the cover.
Updated drivers are available from HP website.
