I could have taken a few $20 bills and just threw them into the wind, and at least I wouldn't have had the aggravation of this annoying printer! Never again. This was my first Brother purchase and it will definitely be the last.

After only 3 weeks of use, I get a constant error message that prevents me from printing. The only fix is to take out the ink cartridge and drum, move a lever several times, wipe it down with a lint free cloth, and then put it back in the machine. That will allow me to print two more pages, and then the error message will appear again.

I have checked on-line and have found numerous complaints about this. Some people have replaced the toner cartridge, only to find the problem persists.

Oh, and just incase you are wondering, you can buy 2 of these lousy printers on sale at Staples for the price of 1 replacement toner cartridge! Yikes!

The worst aspect of Brother's products in this category is the need to replace the drum cartridges on a regular basis. The cartridge for this unit costs more than I paid for the machine in the first place. Admittedly, the machine was heavily discounted, but then again the cartridges never are. Brother's estimates for the life of these drum units is very, shall we say, "conservative" if not downright untrue. The cost of operating this machine rises dramatically as you start replacing these units. I have a Brother copier and fax machine and will be phasing them out this year to more economical HP products which may have a higher purchase price but provide better value in the long run.

We purchased SIX HL2040 and HL2140 PRINTERS. THEY ARE REDICULOUSLY HARD TO DEAL WITH BECAUSE OF THE WAY THE TONER AND DRUM REPLACEMENT IS SO DIFFICULT. HAVE TO CALL THE HELP LINE EVERY TIME WE TRY TO REPLACE THE TONER AND DRUM. IF YOU DON'T DO IT RIGHT, YOU ARE UNABLE TO USE THEM AT ALL FOR THE FUTURE. BROTHER WILL ONLY COVER DEFECTIVE TONER & DRUMS IF THEY HAVE BEEN PURCHASED ONLY 90 DAYS PRIOR TO CALLING THEM. THIS MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP CARTRIDGES OR DRUMS ON HAND. THE DRUM UNIT DOES NOT LAST FOR THREE CARTRIDGES. THE PRINTERS ARE PIECES OF JUNK. THE HELP DESK PEOPLE ARE LIKE ROBOTS.

Good inexpensive laser printer. Had an expensive printer, when sent back for warranty repair we had to buy another printer or be without a printer for 2 weeks. With no regrets, I just junked my 18 mo old (out of warrantee) low priced printer. This printer was cheaper than the circut board for the old one.

The thing I do not like about this Brother's model opposed to the one I had before, is the fact that paper seems to get caught very easily while printing. In order to get it out one has to remove the laser cartridge which is cumbersome. The paper fits snug into the tray.

I am using windows xp and since sp3 the CD from Brother has not been updated, so printer is installed plug and play. After a short time using had 1 jam but printer seems satisfactory for personal use. I wouldn't think useful for business use.

I have the "w" version, which is network and wireless capable. Set up worked good, but the docs could have been better. I liked the built-in web that allows you to check on usage and settings over the network. The toner, however, ran out after only 309 pages! (one of the things it keeps track of). The toner included is a "starter" (this from Brother and the manual) and is supposed to be good for 1000 pages. Tech support said there was most likely a "problem" with the thing and they would send another one. Johnny on the spot they are not. Beware

This is a great little laser printer! I say "little" because it has a small footprint (i.e. takes up less desk-space than most) and has a low height. The physical size is what drew me to the printer and ultimately was the deciding factor in the purchase. But I was incredibly pleasantly surprised at its performance. It prints reasonably fast (faster would have to be a work-group class printer), and the toner cartridge lasts (I know, I have printed numerous user manuals in the 50-100 page range). The only thing I can find fault with is that the toner cartridges, when you eventually need to replace, cost almost as much as the printer! But, reliability, performance and a slim profile are hard to beat at such an affordable price. In fact, I bought a second one for my brother!

Other than having to download the latest drivers for my Apple iMac, this printer was easy to install and does a very nice job of printing. It's not meant to be a "heavy-duty" printer, but it's a very good printer for the low price, especially after the rebates.

This is a budget laser with high quality output. In terms of construc5tion, it isn't the tank that some of the older HP's that I have used are. But it doesn't have their rated duty cycle either. I got this printer for basic all-around printing when I cared about speed, quality, and cost efficiency. It is a second printer to supplement a much more expensive-to-operate color printer.I have been exceptionally satisfied with it and not only would I recommend it to a friend, but I already have. He is also pleased with the printer.The bang-for-the-buck is fantastic for this printer, particularly with the rebates that have been running lately. It would be a good deal at full price. The Brother printer is better than the others ones. I don't use color much and am more concerned with quick inexpensive copies and easy use. I had to replace the cartridge and it was easy to do.

I'm a long-time HP printer user. I got this as a backup printer for text documents when using a color printer has too high a cost per page.While a bit noisy for a modern laser, it is relatively compact (though I wouldn't say tiny by any means), it is fast and has good print quality -- as one would expect from any laser.About the only thing that I'll say is that if you are installing for Vista, just plug it in. Vista recognizes the printer and installs the driver without the need to bother with any of the software on the CD at all.[...]

Actually this is my fourth purchase of this printer, this one is for my daughter to take to college. Have one at home,One at our business, and one I donated to our Church office. Wonderful printer and slays the inkjets I've been using for years. Beautiful copy! I did have a problem with getting the printer driver onto my Mac, something that has never happened before. I bought this on sale for[$] at Staples. It prints faster and better than the $2000 monster at the office. And better than my $199 Injet. I'm now sold on Brother. I went to the store to buy another for a friend, and they were all sold out. No wonder! Get this deal if you get another chance.

I like this laser printer, HL-2140, from Brother because it cost me about the same as an inkjet printer. A good thing is uptime, for an infrequent user like me, a few pages in a day or two, I can start printing as-soon-as the printer is turned on. Can't tell about the toner usage just yet but the quality is good. I also bought a cartridge TN-330 but don't know when I can use it. Definitely recommend for infrequent user like me.

This printer has been a real joy to use. It prints quickly. The quality is excellent. Set up was so easy I was using it within minutes. I figured for the price that it wouldn't be all that great, but I was wrong. Definitely replaces my inkjet for B/W printing. Haven't had it long enough to comment on toner usage.

Problems we had with our old printer are miraculously gone with our bargain priced Brother. We used to have to constantly switch from printer to sales receipt or would get ensuing headaches. With this machine we can keep it on sales receipt and it will still print at will.

3 Small Problems: The paper occasionally jams for no good reason. We sometimes get extra copies in error. We have to turn it off for it to go into "sleep mode." Aside from these issues it's a great little machine!
