        Solid good printing calculator

        By Matt S.

Comments about Victor Technology Victor® PL8000 Thermal Printing Calculator:

After a month of a half of usage, I now have a solid understanding of the Victor PL8000 to give it a fair review.

When it came out of the box from shipping, the "+" key and spring assembly were detached from the unit within the plastic bag it was packed in. I am not surprised that happened, which meant the packaging design could have been better to keep the keys in place for shipping. I often clean computer keyboards (sometimes removing keys) and reassembling the key back onto the keyboard was easy enough. Other than that the unit was well assembled and solid. Curvature of the number pad is very ergonomic and the tactile feel of the key press is nice.

The best features I like about this printing calculator are:

        - concealed paper roll prevents accidental unrolling of the paper
        - thermal printing which is super fast and quiet
        - the clear dual colour LED display in alpha-numeric, not just digits

The instruction manual showed far more calculations capabilities than I realize this type of calculator can do like #-of-days between dates, hours & minutes calculations, subtotals, group totals, grand total. Learn something new everyday.

I use it to tally my expenses while my son uses it with his accounting courses in university. Quiet printing is a big bonus when he works late into the night.

        On the down side:

It is big and not designed to be hauled around. My son's accounting exams allow calculators. Most portable printing calculators are noisy. The quietness of the PL8000 during exam is a plus but hauling the unit into the exam is not. So the PL8000 do much of its work at home.

Thermal printing only has one colour - black - with Negative numbers in bold print while Positive numbers in regular. It would be nice to have different ways of printing negative numbers such as in-parentheses (which are far more visible than just bold print with negative sign).

Currency is fixed with US dollars as default. We are in Canada. Exchange rate always based on "US$" and is hard coded to print "US$". And there is no way to program it to print "CA$". I don't suppose the manufacturer cared to spec the PL8000 for Canadians.

Overall, the Victor PL8000 is delivering what the manufacturer claims. My overall experience with this calculator is very good. It would have been great if negative numbers can be printed in parentheses and default currency label can be programmed to print "CA$" or any other country's currency.

Comments about Victor Technology Victor® PL8000 Thermal Printing Calculator:

I love this calculator. I work in an office where there's always a lot of numbers flying around and I needed a calculator with tape I could refer back to. I love that this calculator is thermal, I can read the numbers on the tape even after a year. I'm also able to note with the calculator what it was I was working on, and that's awesome- to know that on one tape I have everything I need and can ID what's what. The screen is easy to read and the keys are in the perfect spot for ten-key touch. I gave my first one of these to a co-worker in the office who's other machine broke and I've ordered my second. Won't go to anything else after being spoiled with this one.

Comments about Victor Technology Victor® PL8000 Thermal Printing Calculator:

I love this adding machine. It quite frankly does way more than I need, but I wanted the bigger total button which the smaller thermal calculator (Big Print 1310) does not have. Printing is fast and quiet. The layout of the clear, multiply, divide, equals feels a little awkward to me, but maybe that just comes with the territory of switching brands (I've only ever used Canon machines in the past). The only true negative I have is the old time clunky feel of the buttons. It almost feels like I'm typing on a Commodore 64. Otherwise it's great.

Keep in mind this machine uses thermal paper which is the ones you see in debit/credit card machines and costs more than regular paper. I personally like it better.
