Printable biz cards have taken a step in the right direction. They have increase weight of stock and images seem to take more smoothly.

These cards are great, particularly when you're still in the design mode and haven't quite settled on a final business card. Along with Avery's software/templates, they present an easy way to create multiple versions of a business card, redefining each one until you decide on a final design. Then you can have a professional printer print 500, 1000, etc.
