In June of 2012 I purchased a new desktop computer and laptop as well. Since they both came with windows 7 installed, I soon discovered that almost all of the other hardware I was using was no longer compatible with two new computers. The end result was that I had to replace my printer, scanner, and router. After doing considerable research I decided to purchase an HP Officejet Pro 8600 plus. The primary reason for selecting this printer/copier/scanner was it had four ink cartridges (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) as opposed to the normal two (color/black). Many folks would argue that buying four cartridges as opposed to two doesn't make much sense. My reply to them is do you have any idea of how much ink is left in a tricolor cartridge when one color runs out? The answer is a resounding no. The bottom line is that you have to replace the entire cartridge when one of the three colors runs out. When you think about it "that doesn't make much sense." Thus far I am very pleased with the HP purchase. The printer/scanner/copier works extremely well and I just bought my first replacement cartridges a couple of weeks ago. That represents almost 6 months of fairly heavy duty printing with the cartridges that came with the printer (they are usually not full cartridges folks). Best of all I only paid for one of the color cartridges, I'm still using the original black cartridge, because I was able to get the other two with credit for used cartridges on the Staples Rewards Program. For what ever reason, I saved several years worth of used cartridges, from former printers, hoping to recycle them at some point. It definitely paid off when it came to buying the new HD color cartridges. So be sure to recycle your used cartridges, and any one else's you can get a hold of, and then sign up for the Staples rewards program...it's well worth the effort. By the way, Staples has an excellent supply of most cartridges for most printers currently on the market.

It was easy to install, but I would get an error msg on my HP 8600 Plus "cover not closed". After re-closing several times & re-installing thew cartridge. I called HP support who were useless because my HP 8600 was one week after warranty ran out. HP said tough. Basically the HP 8600 is a 1 yr throwaway. And I still have a blue cartridge unused. I would not recommend a HP 8600 to a friend.
Comments about HP 951XL Cyan Ink Cartridge (CN046AN), High Yield:
Works as advertised. Compared to laser toners all inks are too expensive. Not much else to say. I do get about 3-4 reams (500 pages each) of paper out of these cartridges so my 1,500-2,000 pages per cartridge is better than typical cheapo ink technology these days. As ink printers go, these HP OfficeJet's that utilize the 950-951XL cartridge-based ink printing systems are relatively efficient and cost-effective to operate even when printing a lot of color material. For color ink printing I highly recommend.

Q:
Will the HP 951 XL color cartridges work in my HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium? I use the XL Black but the width of the XL color looks too wide to fit. Will it automatically adjust to the wider cartridge? I would much prefer using the XL side for all the cartridges. Thanks for your help.
