Q: I have a Mail Mate 5. Can't I just lubricate with machine oil? These sheets strike me as unnecessarily expensive compared to a few drops of oil. Asked on 7/1/2010 by Anonymous Know the answer? Answer this question 4 answers A: According to nearly all manufacturers' warranties and specs, use the specially formulated shredder oil because it is designed to remove the dust and particles that gunk up the blades and parts. WD-40 and other petroleum-based products when used in a shredder will NOT do this and eventually the gunk literally hardens like cement, ruining your shredder and voiding the warranty. However, you can make your own oil sheets: buy bottled shredder oil and apply it in a zig-zag pattern across a sheet of copy/print paper top to bottom, and run it through the shredder. Run your shredder in reverse for a few seconds to distribute the oil, then shred a couple of dry sheets of paper to remove excess oil. If there doesn't appear to be excess oil, oil both sides of your oiling paper or run two sheets of oiled paper through your shredder before running it in reverse and shredding plain paper. Personal cross-cut shredders should be oiled every 30 minutes of run time, or a minimum of 2X per month. Answered on 4/9/2013 by Inkspiration...Inspired Writing/Editing from Downingtown, PA A: You can use shredder oil, but these sheets are an cleaner way to lubricate the shredder. Answered on 7/16/2010 by Customer Care from Staples A: Most shredders require a non-petroleum lubricant. If you don't want to buy the lube oil made specifically for shredders, you can put a little vegtable oil on a sheet of printer paper ( both sides ) and run it through your shredder. It isn't as good as the real thing, but it will be much better than a petroleum lubricant. Petroleum oil will cause damage to your unit and eventually you will be out looking for a new shredder. I know I did it. It was a sad day when I found out that I caused the destruction of my own machine. Answered on 4/1/2011 by Clem the Shredder from Atascadero, CA A: Yes, I was told that your can simply spray WD-40 spray on 1 side of a sheet of paper and run it through your shredder with the same (very much less expensive) result. Q: This is a pretty simple question, but I can't find the answer and want to be sure about exactly how to use these sheets. Do I need to remove the sheets from the paper wrappers and then insert or do I insert the whole thing, wrapper and all? The picture on the package looks like it's "wrapper and all", but from some of the reader comments, it sounds like the sheet gets removed from the paper wrapper, then inserted. Please clarify. Thanks. Asked on 2/24/2010 by Blamethecats from Rural New York State Know the answer? Answer this question 2 answers A: No you do not open or tear the lubricant sheet prior to shredding it. Answered on 3/18/2010 by Customer Care from Staples A: The sheets are used intact. I haveused them for a long time and never opened them because the instructions say not to open the packet. They do a great job if you just run them through the shredder in the direction of the arrows on the packets. After you run them through, stop the machine and reverse it for a minute or two. The blades are thoroughly cleaned if you do this. It's a good idea to empty the bin afterwards because of the oily "shreddies" left behind. Answered on 4/13/2010 by jigsawwoman from Martinsburg, WV
