Hi Steve Fifty pages would be a decent amount if it were pictures or other ink-depleting items. Otherwise I understand your feelings. The XL cartridges should provide more value. The flip side to that statement is that XL cartridges tend to stay on the printer for longer sometimes leading to dry cartridges. Always wipe off the printhead to prevent ink from drying on it. Powering off the printer moves the cartridge to a covered spot in the printer. This action helps the printer ink last longer. Amanda HP Care www.hp.com/support/
