Hi there Charles It is plausible the cartridge was defective. If that was the case then I sincerely apologize. If the cartridge lasted forty pages assess why it lasted so little. Contents such as color printing and tables are often the cause. Photos use the most ink. To catch any potential errors on the page use print preview. After printing I would also clean the copper contacts on the printhead to prevent a dry cartridge.
