Hi Phyllis I'm sorry that you are dissatisfied by your printer needing all of the cartridges to print black. While there some printers that can print with just black yours is not one of them. There are advantages and disadvantages to different types of printers. Many people prefer the ones like yours with separate ink cartridges because you only have to replace each single color as it runs out. Now you will still (very rarely) have to get color cartridges because the tiny nozzles that spray the ink onto the paper will clog unless they are cleared regularly.
