Hello Bob, I am very sorry for the misunderstanding about how printer types work. Your printer model has much different cartridges than a lot of the other HP printers. Because your printer uses separate color cartridges (rather than a tri-color one), you need to have a cartridge in each cartridge slot and each cartridge needs to have some ink in it. There are advantages and disadvantages to each type of printer. Many people prefer the ones like yours, with separate ink cartridges, because you only have to replace each single color as it runs out. Then, you will still (very rarely) have to get color cartridges because the tiny nozzles that spray the ink onto the paper will clog unless they are cleared regularly. Hi Marilyn I was sad to hear that this happened to you. If you got the low ink message immediately the cartridge might have been defective and you could have returned it for replacement. The low ink message is intended to alert you to the fact that you might want to get a replacement soon. Most of the time you can print for a while before it will stop printing. The maintenance routines might have caused the ink to get lower. A few drops of ink here and there are used to keep the inkjets cleared and ready for your next print job. Over a period of time they can add up. To prevent problems: - Turn the printer off when it is not being used for a while - Always use the power button on the printer itself to turn your printer off.
