Have always used HP cartridges with great success, and the HP22 is fine. However, why wasn't I able to purchase the black ink cartridge HP21 also?

Long Lived HP InkJet Printer
Well, this inquiry was about an ink cartridge. However shortly after receiving it, my DeskJet 1420 gave up the ghost. After looking it up, I found that it was purchased in 2008. So, my little printer served me well for 17 years! This is why I use Hewlett-Packard products. Exploring a new HP printer now and I am satisfied with it.

Too expensive for duration of use.
Excellent color reproduction but these ink wells seem to either too little ink for the price or perhaps dry up when used infrequently.
