Who knew....
you needed a high speed HDMI cable to use a 4K TV as a monitor? I got a 65" 4K tv to use as a monitor and thanks to the chat at C2G I was able to get this adapter and the right cable. It's not cheap, but the technology is pretty specialized, and it's worth it to make everything work.

Not the right cable
It wasn’t the correct cable I needed to connect to my laptop. I had to purchase a separate cable.
