The thing is, on a Brother machine, you can replenish the toner cartridge multiple times before a new drum cartridge is required. On most machines, when it's out of toner, the toner and drum are in a single cartridge, so you have to spend [$]on one of those every time the toner runs out. With on of these, you don't.By the way, very seldom is a line on your copies and faxes the fault of the drum. Much more often, the platen needs cleaning. When originals are scanned while moving across a narrow strip of platen glass (which is separate from a flat platen glass if the machine has a "book copy" or "flatbed scanner" feature), a speck of something stuck to the platen strip will make a line. As the original moves across the platen strip and is scanned, the dot is "interpreted" as a line on the moving original. It can be some "white out" but even more often, it's a speck of toner that flaked off an original. Rubbing alcohol or Windex will remove it. (Trying mixing 50% Windex or the equivalent with 50% rubbing alcohol for cleaning platen glass on copiers and scanners.)I recommend a lint-free brand of paper towels. Some are very linty -- my favorite lint-free paper towel is "Sparkle."

This office had an older model Brother Fax machine. I could not purchase under my company contract price due to the age. The drum is not cheap and I actually thought about purching a new fax machine. Wwhat choice did I have but to buy it as the office was waiting for faxes to print.

When I replaced this drum the copies were produced "dirty". Before I installed this drum the copies were produced bright and clean. After I installed it the copies had a heavy gray background. There were no instruction or warnings about what to do to prevent this from happening. The copies have since improved but they are still somewhat dirty. I am disappointed at the result of this product.
Drum needs replacing about every 3 weeks. Initially it was about 5 - 6 weeks, but after the first six months, it seems a drum only lasts for about 3 weeks before it runs out & wont work
