Just use a normal 6-sided scale

Comments about Chartpak® Adjustable Triangular Scale for Engineers:

You spin the rod to change the scale, while the tick marks stay the same. As a result, the tick marks are generic, and therefore difficult to read. Also, you do indeed have to pick up the scale in order to change the scale you're using.

The standard six-sided star wars-looking engineering scale is much more practical and useful, and less prone to error.

It's heavy, though. Hence the good use in combat.
