We do taxes and investments. We buy a replacement as soon as we install the stored cartridge. The one we just bought won't be opened till fall. By and large the cartridges have been very good performers, although two years ago we had a leaker and had to pay to have the printer cleaned. We put 2-3 cartridges a year in the machine. I've been here 5 years. One dud in 15 isn't TOO bad.

I have had problems with substitute brand cartridges including bad copies and fewer copies per cartridge. But the price of the unit (by HP)is ridiculous-especially since most of the cartridges are refilled units....Read complete review

Several times I have tried other toners that claim to be identical to HP, but they are not the same...every cartridge I have tried leaked toner in my machine and made a mess. I returned them to the vendors for a replacement and the replacement cartridge, too, would leak toner. It's just not worth the hassle. HP toner is the best! I have never had a problem with HP toner cartridges leaking toner.

          According to HP a "Replace Cartridge" message appears when one of the following two situations appear:
          •When the print cartridge is out of toner.
          •When the drum life of the print cartridge is out.
          The recommended product to clean the drum is item 614172, HP Q2429A 110V Printer Maintenance Kit. A new drum is not available. You may consult your printer manual or contact HP if you require futher information.
