In less than a year with my new 6500 printer, I've just bought my second XL pack. The original smaller one didn't seem to run out before 3 months, but I replaced it with the XL size like the others. My first XL was flagged as low well before 6 months, which isn't a clear advantage in lifetime. I replaced it with my original small size to make sure I use any ink left; then I have the next XL ready when needed. But its price of only 50% more than the small size means this is the right one for me to buy. I use regularly only for personal purposes. But it produces very clear charts and other work for my attorney so he has a visual understanding while he follows my verbal explanations. I've been very pleased with these results in particular; they matter so I can help my attorney work even better for what I want. I use all the colors to make these charts. I sometimes even color-code my text to make my points clearer. The shadings are distinct; this allows for more versatility in any area I work.

Not as much as you would think

The XL cartridge states that it prints approximately 700 pages so I mistakenly thought that 1 or 2 cartridges would print 400-500 pages with a lavendar picture. I needed 7 or 8 magenta XL cartridges (and several cyan) to complete one print job. Originally, I thought that I had purchased an old, dry cartridge or that a regular cartridge was inadvertently placed in an XL cartridge box. I now think that I need to purchase another printer (not HP)even though I just purchased this printer.

When printing regular every day documents, I prefer to use black ink only to save on the color inks. There are times when printing special greeting cards, power point slides, etc. that I need to use color ink to appreciate the full quality of the presentation. That's when I really count on HP Color Ink to produce the best results. In the past, I have purchases the 920 color ink cartridges. They did not last that long. I have not completed using the new 920XL Magenta ink cartridge, but I am looking forward to it providing more color documents than the 920 cartridge.

I mainly use my printer for school work-papers, documents, graphs, charts, etc. The HP920 XL cartridges provide great color, are long lasting, and quick drying. The quality of the ink is phenomenal. When I make copies using my printer, it is next to impossible to tell the copy form them original. I would use no other ink.
