Please encourage Staples' cashiers to...

1.) Ask whether the customer would like the product placed in a bag;

2.) If yes, put the product in the bag;

3.)HAND THE BAG TO THE CUSTOMER!

It's an insult to the customer to omit step 3-- doing so carries the message, "We've taken your money and we don't care to expend any more effort on you. Now take your junk and get outta here."

When a cashier fails to execute step 3.), I stand at the register, blocking the next transaction until the cashier notices that I haven't left. When he or she looks at me as if to say, "What do YOU want?" I politely ask him/her to hand me my purchase. If I get a sullen or puzzled look, I explain that it's incredibly rude to treat customers as if they vanish once they hand over the cash.

This policy isn't unique to Staples, alas-- it's spreading throughout the retail industry. And for what reason? Faster register throughput? Heeding the advice of some lame-brained and overpaid retail consultant?

One of our local stores (West Lebanon) is improving in its frequency of executing step 3.), but a couple of their cashiers occasionally forget.
