Cornell notebooks are ideal for anyone serious about taking quality notes. These notebooks are designed in the classic Cornell notes layout, so the pages are structured for you. Choose from a variety of colors and sizes to enhance your note-taking experience based on your needs.

What Is the Cornell Method of Note-Taking?

The Cornell note-taking style is a systematic method for organizing notes designed for high school and college students. However the benefits of the Cornell system are available to any student or note taker who is interested in condensing their notes and increasing their note-taking efficiency. Invented by Walter Pauk, a Cornell University professor, in the 1940s, the Cornell method of taking notes is thought to help the brain organize and retain information.

The Cornell note-taking process can be roughly divided into five sections:
  • Record - Record the information delivered during the lecture or reading.
  • Cues/Questions - As soon as you’re finished with the reading or lecture, create cues or questions to help you clarify the information included in the notes.
  • Recite - Cover the notes portion of the page and, with only the cues/questions visible, recite the answers or related information that the questions and cues trigger.
  • Reflect - Think about how the material you’ve covered in your notes contributes to your previous knowledge. Consider potential applications of the information and matters that have been open ended and require further elaboration.
  • Review - Spend dedicated chunks of time reviewing your notes, which will help you retain the information.

What Are the Main Parts of a Cornell Notes Page?

  • Notes - This is where you’ll record the information your instructor covers during a presentation or that you’ve gathered from your latest reading from a textbook or online resource. The notes column composes the majority of your page, taking up roughly ⅔ of the page on the right hand side.
  • Cues - This is where, most likely after your lecture or reading, you can add cues like questions or prompts that can help you retain the information you’ve added in the notes column. This column typically takes up less space than the notes column, generally around ⅓ of the page on the left side.
  • Summary - You can fill this in at any time, but it may be most helpful to summarize your notes right after your class or presentation in order to document the most important points accurately.

What Types of Notebooks Are Best Suited for Cornell Notes?

If you’re shopping for notebooks or notepads that are compatible with the Cornell style, look for Cornell ruled notebooks and notepads that come pre-formatted for Cornell note-taking. This means the proper columns are already on the notebook page in the right places to follow Pauk’s method. Each notebook includes 60-80 pages, depending on the size you opt for. Cornell ruled notebooks tend toward the smaller size, often being smaller than legal-sized paper sheets. Typically they range from 5 ½ to 7 ½ inches wide and 8 ½ to 9 ½ inches long.
