If you work in a hospital, industrial building, or an active construction site, it’s likely that you’re required to wear a face mask or respirator. These helpful face coverings come in handy if you’re working in an environment that is frequently exposed to airborne particles. One of the most sought-after masks for the highest level of respiratory protection is the N95 mask. Let’s dive into some of the other benefits and features of N95 face masks for sale at Staples.
What Is an N95 Mask?
N95 masks are specialized masks that provide respiratory protection for the wearer against airborne biological particles. They contain two straps, a flexible nose piece that can be molded around the bridge of the nose to ensure proper fit, and most include a respirator to ensure maximum protection. Some N95 face masks even include a carbon layer that helps filter out additional airborne particles.
N95 masks are an example of personal protective equipment (PPE) that many industries and professions use to keep their employees safe. They, and other forms of PPE, are designed to be disposable but incredibly effective in how they protect the user. For example, some masks are fluid resistant and protect the wearer from substances such as blood or other infectious liquids, while others can filter out microscopic airborne particles.
How to Wear an N95 Mask
Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using an N95 mask to ensure maximum protection and the safety of the wearer. First, make sure the mask is covering your mouth and nose at all times so you will be protected from airborne particles like mold, dust, and more. Next, make sure the N95 mask fits snugly against your bare skin. Unfortunately, masks will not completely protect wearers with beards or lots of facial hair, so to get maximum protection, it’s wise to have clean-shaven skin when using N95 masks.
Additionally, use both straps of the mask, placing one on the lower side of the back of your head, and the other on the upper side of the back of your skull to ensure a snug fit.
How to Check Mask Fit
It’s relatively simple to check if you’re wearing your N95 mask correctly. The first thing you should do is check if the air you are breathing is only entering and leaving the mask via the filter. You can do this by placing your hands so they cover the face mask completely and inhaling. Don’t press down or disturb the mask while doing this. The N95 mask should go concave, pulling in toward your face. If any air escapes around your eyes or other parts of your face, check the fit of the nose piece and straps and then repeat this check.
Alternatively, place your hands so they completely cover the mask and exhale. If there is an exhalation valve present on your make, make sure your hands have covered it. No air should leak if the N95 face mask is properly fitted.
