HDMI, or High-Definition Multimedia Interface, is by far the most common input/output protocol on modern televisions, video game consoles, AV receivers, cable boxes and more. These devices are connected by HDMI cables, which send and receive audio and video signals. In many cases a simple HDMI cable will suffice, however some scenarios require additional equipment like HDMI splitters or adapters.

What Are HDMI Splitters and Adapters and How Are They Used?

HDMI Splitters

If you’re looking to connect a single source to multiple TVs or digital signage, you’ll need an HDMI splitter. It replicates the source signal and sends it through multiple HDMI cables to multiple devices. HDMI Adapters

In other situations, your source device may not have an HDMI port. You can use an HDMI adapter to connect these devices that typically couldn’t be connected, creating a seamless digital experience. HDMI adapters convert popular connection types, such as DVI-D, VGA, USB or USB-C to an HDMI connection to be used with monitors and televisions that require it.

What’s the Difference Between HDMI Splitter Cables and HDMI Switches?

Although many people reference HDMI "switches" and "splitters" interchangeably, they are not actually the same. While HDMI splitters allow the user to send one signal to multiple output devices, switches allow them to connect multiple source devices and “switch” between them. This lets you choose which signal to send to the output device at any given time.

For example, you might use HDMI switches if your TV or computer speakers lack enough HDMI inputs for the number of sources needed. If your TV has two HDMI inputs but you want to connect a cable box, a Roku and a gaming console, you’ll need an HDMI switch to connect and switch between all three source signals.

Keep in mind that HDMI splitters and switches are labeled by the number of inputs and outputs, respectively. Therefore, a 1x3 splitter will have one input sent to three outputs. This is not the same thing as a 3x1 HDMI switch, which has three inputs and one output.
