What’s the Difference Between HDMI Splitter Cables and HDMI Switches?
Although many people reference HDMI "switches" and "splitters" interchangeably, they are not actually the same. While HDMI splitters allow the user to send one signal to multiple output devices, switches allow them to connect multiple source devices and “switch” between them. This lets you choose which signal to send to the output device at any given time.
For example, you might use HDMI switches if your TV or computer speakers lack enough HDMI inputs for the number of sources needed. If your TV has two HDMI inputs but you want to connect a cable box, a Roku and a gaming console, you’ll need an HDMI switch to connect and switch between all three source signals.
Keep in mind that HDMI splitters and switches are labeled by the number of inputs and outputs, respectively. Therefore, a 1x3 splitter will have one input sent to three outputs. This is not the same thing as a 3x1 HDMI switch, which has three inputs and one output.
