Not adequate for purpose.
Book ends that don't hold books never good. Only capable of securing leaf binders etc. Low range of usefulness.

Good enough for what I needed
These work the best if the books are not the size of Notebooks. 9" or less is perfect. Fortunately I have the notebooks up against a file cabinet that is taller than the cabinet that they sit on so I needed this for the end with the smaller books.

simple bookends
This exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to hold up my books without taking up any shelf space. I got mine on sale and used rewards to pay for them.

No nonsense - secure and stable bookends
These bookends do the job in a minimalist way saving space on your surface for more books or other items. They hold tall and think binders and books of all sizes with ease. Get them.

7" High Black Granite Fashion Bookends
Flimsy. They tend to bend from the weight of large books

Does the job well.
Staples gave me several bookend choices so I found some that just fit my needs. Other places I looked either didn't carry bookends at all or had only one kind.

Staples bookend
too bad that you refused to accept my $4.00 certificate because you changed the expiration policy without informing me even though I have been in the store recently for other things.

No monster leaning books
Keeps binders together just fine but be sure not to use heavy books that like to lean.
