Learn More About Power Protection

What type of power protection do you need?

UPS battery backup

Ideal for:  Providing both surge protection and emergency backup power to electronic equipment, especially computers and servers. A UPS battery backup protects against permanent data loss by giving users time to save files during power fluctuations and outages.

Key features:

  • Effective protection against surges, sags, spikes, noise, blackouts, and power failures.
  • The duration of backup battery power varies by model, providing five minutes to an hour to save files and shut the computer down safely.
  • Some UPS models come with equipment protection, which covers the loss (up to $35,000 and in some cases $350,000) of connected equipment in the event of UPS failure.
  • Includes three to eight power outlets, depending on the model. More outlets backup more machines and reduce wire clutter.
  • VA (Volt Amperes) rating affects the power (in watts) — as well as the number of machines/appliances — a UPS can back up. Opt for a high VA rating when backing up powerful equipment, such as large network servers or refrigerators.
  • Many models include USB outlets (to protect computer peripherals, such as external CD and DVD drives) as well as phone line and DSL line outlets (to protect fax machines and Internet connections).
  • Audible alarm notifies users when there has been a power disruption.
  • The battery that provides backup power has to be recharged after it's been used. It can take from three to 24 hours to recharge fully, depending on the model.
Important note: If you do not use a UPS battery backup or a surge protector, any damage to a device caused by power fluctuations or outages will likely not be covered by either the manufacturer's warranty or your insurance provider. For specific insurance coverage regarding power disturbances, contact your insurance provider.

Surge protector

Ideal for:  Protecting sensitive equipment, such as computers, office equipment (including fax machines, printers, copiers, etc.), clocks, microwaves, stereos, and VCR/DVD players against malfunctions and irreparable damage caused by electrical surges and power fluctuations. Does not provide backup power, however, so in–progress files and documents will likely still be lost during power disturbances.

Key features:

  • Effective against surges, sags, spikes, noise, blackouts, and power failures. Does not provide emergency backup power.
  • Some UPS models come with equipment protection, which covers the loss (up to $35,000 and in some cases $350,000) of connected equipment in the event of UPS failure.
  • Includes one to twelve power outlets, depending on the model. The more outlets, the more machines it can protect. More outlets also protect more machines and reduce wire clutter.
  • Joule ratings range from 167 to 2850. The higher the Joule rating, the greater the protection rating for connected equipment.
  • Power cord length ranges from 3 to 15 feet. Opt for a long cord if your work area or home has wall sockets that are limited in number or inconveniently placed.
  • Surge protectors that have Isolated Filter Banks help eliminate interference generated by connected equipment. This can eliminate computer lockups and data errors.
Available designs: mobile, monitor, strip and wall designs.

Important note:  If you do not use a UPS battery backup or a surge protector, any damage to a device caused by power fluctuations or outages will likely not be covered by either the manufacturer's warranty or your insurance provider. For specific insurance coverage regarding power disturbances, contact your insurance provider.
