What type of writing pad do you need?
Message pad or notebook
Ideal for: Taking messages for people who are away from their desks or out of the office.
Key features:
- Each slip typically has designated areas for taking down a person’s name, company, telephone number, as well as date, time, and importance of the message. Also provides a few lines for message details.
- Some message pads create carbonless duplicates so you always have a record of the call.
- Some pads offer message slips with self–adhesive backs, which allow you to stick messages to computer screens, bulletin boards, office doors, etc.
- One to four message slips per page, depending on the message pad or notebook that you choose.
- Some notebooks come with stickers to draw attention to urgent messages.
What’s available: Message pads with 50 single message slips and message notebooks with four message slips per page (200 or 400 total).
Steno book
Ideal for: Jotting down notes. Smaller than letter– and legal–size writing pads, so it easily fits into a briefcase, bag, or purse.
Key features:
- Typically 6" X 9" and Gregg ruled.
- Has between 80 and 144 double–sided pages, depending on the steno book.
- Some steno books come with perforated sheets for easy page removal.
- Wire binding at top of steno book.
- A stiff, reinforced backing will make note taking easier.
What’s available: Steno books are available with a variety of different paper colors, including white, green, gray, pink, orchid, and blue.
Writing and legal pad
Ideal for: Letter– and legal size pages offer ample room for lengthy notes.
Key features:
- Typically has 15 lb. letter–size (8 ½" X 11 ¾") or legal–size paper (8 ½" X 14"). 50 to 100 sheets per pad.
- Choose from a large assortment of rulings. Wide, medium (college), narrow (legal), and jr. legal ruled pads are all ideal for note taking. Computation, quad, Euro–quad, and cross–section rulings are ideal for engineers, architects, interior designers or any professional responsible for precise technical writing or scale drawings. Pitman ruled is well suited for shorthand notes. Law ruled is best for legal work.
- Some writing pads come with top and/or middle perforated pages for easy full or half page removal. Three types of perforation available: micro–perforation, pinhole perforation, and slot perforation.
- Three–hole punched sheets can be removed and put into a three–ring binder. Top two–hole punched sheets can be removed and fastened into folders or binders.
- Pages are held together with glue adhesive (glue–top pads) or heavy duty staples (perforated pads). Perforated pads generally have a left–side margin, while glue–top pads have no margin.
- Some pads come in water–resistant folders that offer additional protection.
