Finding the perfect PC for your virtual learner
As more students transition to remote learning, it is more important than ever to make sure your child has the right tools to ensure their success. Having the right technology ensures fast, uninterrupted access to the documents, videos and streams they will engage with on a daily basis. But how do you find the right laptop without breaking the bank? We recommend looking out for 5 key factors when making your selection:
1.Processing Power:
A good processor is the foundation of a laptop. It’s important that your processor can handle video streaming and multitasking to be a successful virtual learning PC. While most PCs can handle these activities without issue, we recommend stepping up to an Intel® i3 processor or AMD A series process if possible to ensure smooth performance.
2.Screen Size:
Let’s face it, your kid is unlikely to spend the entire day at the dining room table or in their room without moving around a bit. Portability is important and your screen size will impact how easy it is for your child to move around your house. A larger screen means a heavier laptop. For virtual learners, aim for a laptop between 13 and 15 inches. This gives kids the flexibility to move, while ensuring enough screen size to easily see smaller objects in virtual lessons.
3.Operating System:
When it comes to operating systems, you really have 3 choices, Mac®, Windows® or Chrome. Windows PCs and Chromebooks offer affordable options for students of all ages. While most people are comfortable with a Windows operating system, Chromebooks are a low cost and secure option to consider for your child’s first laptop.
4.Bells and Whistles:
Many low cost laptops cut out lesser thought of features to save money. But consider how certain features may be important to your child’s comfort and success:
-
USB ports: Hooking up a keyboard or mouse? You’ll probably need USB ports for Bluetooth® connections
-
Audio jack: For virtual learning, we recommend students use over the ear headphones with a microphone to reduce distractions in the home, and to ensure others can hear them clearly. If you don’t want to splurge on Bluetooth headphones, make sure there’s somewhere to plug them in
-
Battery life: Look for a laptop with 8+ hours of battery life. Give your child the flexibility to move around without bringing a power cord everywhere.
