Individual FAQs
Q: What do I need to do my taxes?
A: Here are the types of forms and documents you’ll want to have handy:
- Personal and dependent information (e.g., Social Security numbers and birthdates)
- Forms that show your source of income and any taxes withheld (e.g., W-2, 1099s)
- Records that document potential deductions or credits (e.g., your Letter 6419 showing your advance child tax credit amounts, charitable donations, childcare or educational expenses)
Q:What do I need to think about for my 2021 taxes that’s different from last year?
A: The biggest tax changes may be ones related to your life changes. For example, if you had a change in your work situation, received unemployment or took on a side job, your tax withholding may be different than in past years. Life changes (such as a lower annual income or a new child) could also entitle you to receive an additional recovery rebate credit when you file. Worried about getting it all right? Rest easy, our software will walk you through your taxes, step by step, so you don’t miss a thing.
Q:I worked from home for most of 2021. Can I take deductions for home office expenses?
A:If you’re an employee (meaning you receive a W-2 from your employer), you most likely do not qualify for the home office deduction. Under the current tax rules, only self-employed individuals can take a home office deduction or deduct home office expenses. There are a few limited exceptions for certain employee types, such as Armed Forces reservists or qualified performing artists.
Q:What are the benefits of H&R Block’s software?
A:Filing with H&R Block means you’ve got guidance every step of the way—all at a value you’ll love! You can count on getting all the credits and deductions you deserve, plus free in-person audit support (a $40 value).
Q:How easy is it to switch from my current tax prep method to H&R Block?
A:You can easily import your tax return information from last year, and we’ll use the information to start this year’s return. Plus, you can use our tools, like uploading your W-2 by taking a pic, for any new documents that you have.
