When people think "poster design," they tend to focus on colors and other graphic elements rather than the stock of the poster itself. Interestingly enough, the material that a poster, banner or other signs are printed on matters to its efficacy as a vehicle for your brand's message, as well as its value to the buyer.
For those who might be short on a chemistry degree, here are three questions you should ask yourself if you're hoping to find the exact sign material necessary to inform and entertain.
(Don't worry — we've included the answers, too.)

1. Will I post my sign indoors or outdoors?
Posters are very much homebodies — they thrive in environments where they won't get wet and are protected from direct sunlight. That's why heavyweight posters and high-impact photography prints are ideal for indoor signs.
However, you may want to adjust exactly which sign product you'll purchase depending on the lighting in the area you plan to mount it.
• |
Bright lighting — Standard and super heavyweight posters include a matte finish that prevents glare. |
• |
Low lighting — Photo gloss posters offer outstanding color composition to make designs pop even in dim light. |
• |
Somewhere-in–between lighting - Heavyweight options will work, or you can consider photo semi-gloss for eye-catching color and sheen protection. |
• |
No lighting lighting — Don't hang signs at all. No one will see them. (We're joking.) |

Most printed signage cannot brave the elements, but outdoor scrim vinyl can withstand most weather for as long as six months. To safeguard your outdoor signage even more, ask a store associate about adding Accushield as a finishing option. It can prolong the life of your outdoor sign and save you from buying replacements sooner.

2. Will I need this sign to perform in the short or long term?
Signs don't have to be a temporary fixture if you plan ahead and choose a material with a lengthy potential lifespan. Luckily, if your signs remain indoors, they have a greater chance of staying picture perfect for a year or more.
Pro tip: Standard and super heavyweight posters, as well as glossy and semi-gloss photo prints, can last up to four years or longer.

3. How will I display my sign?
Every sign needs mounting, but trying to force a poster or banner to hang in a way it shouldn't could damage the product and your property.
If you're not looking to put holes in the wall, intentionally or accidentally, try posters with adhesive easel backing. These signs rest well on any flat indoor surface. Moreover, banner stands are available to prominently display your banners.
If you're a little on the handier side and would prefer to hang your signage, banners could also come equipped with adhesive banner hangers or grommets to facilitate a safe display. Word to the wise: Polypropylene banners are lighter than scrims and might place less strain on your wall or ceiling.
