Packing 101: Basics
Moving to a new space is an exciting time, full of possibility. But it can also be stressful and overwhelming. Follow these tips to keep your move efficient and your items well-protected.
Tip 1: When assembling boxes, use Scotch® packaging tape to seal the seam on the bottom, then place another piece of tape perpendicular to the seam for extra support. It’s best to fill boxes completely to keep them from collapsing.
Tip 2: Pack heavy items in smaller boxes to avoid back strain.
Tip 3: Start prepping for your move early. Assemble boxes and place them around your home. They'll help remind you to pack a little bit every day. Designate one box as a donation box — use this to determine what you really need to keep.
Tip 4: Make sure valuables are securely wrapped with bubble roll. If you can feel the item through the wrap, it still needs more protection.
Packing 201: Strategy
Now that you know how you’re going to pack the boxes, consider these strategic tips to keep the moving process even easier.
Tip 1: Use Scotch® Expressions tape to add some color to your move. Assign each family member or each room in your new home a different color or design, and label each box accordingly.
Tip 2: Consider packing a few “Open Me First” boxes. Include in them familiar items that will make everyone feel at home right away, as well as items that you use on a daily basis.
Tip 3: Label each side of boxes, so no matter which direction they turn you'll know what's inside. Also be sure to label fragile boxes with an arrow indicating which way should face up.
Tip 4: Unpacking can be a breeze when tools, cleaning supplies, extension cords and surge protectors are easy to find. Fill a box with these essential items and make it the last box you place into the moving truck, so it'll be the first you unpack.
Packing by Item
Many objects we own don’t fit easily, safely or manageably into a box. Here are some tips for packing common items many people struggle with during moves.
Packing by Space
Clear labeling is an often overlooked step in moving. But when you set down your last box in a bare room, next to a pile of identical boxes the significance of clear labeling may feel painfully real. Simple and attractive DIY labels up the ante on your moving strategy. We promise they will make the last leg of your move much smoother.
Packing for the Long Haul
If you’re storing packages for a long period of time, or storing in a space that’s susceptible to seasonal climate shifts, use Scotch® Long Lasting moving and storage packaging tape. It features a unique adhesive designed to withstand extreme temperatures that won’t deteriorate over time. It’s ideal for storing items in basements, attics, garages and self-storage facilities.
