          This lead is great stuff. Tested in the trenches of elementary school. My daughter's fifth grade class uses mechanical pencils for all or their pencil writing in class. The teacher finds that the use of mechanical pencils alleviates unnecessary ups/downs. The lead is quite resiliant and does not break easily. When advancing the lead large pieces do not break away, as is common in cheaper quality product. If these work great with 10 year olds, just imagine how much you can do with them :)

                    For the darkest marks you need the 2Bs (see link). The range is 2H (hard and light), H, HB, B, and finally 2B (soft and dark).
