Expand your computer’s storage capacity and improve its performance by switching to a solid-state drive, or SSD drive 1TB. An SSD drive is a faster computer storage unit than a hard disk drive (HDD). It stores data on memory cells rather than spinning magnetic disks. With no moving parts, SSDs are quieter than HDDs and also more reliable and energy-efficient. Find different types of SSDs in the large inventory of data storage drives at Staples.

Choose from different 1TB SSD form factors
The three major form factors for consumer SSDs are 2.5-inch, mSATA, and M.2. A 2.5-inch SSD 1TB has the same physical dimension as the HDDs commonly used in laptops and some desktop computers. With the right adapter, this drive can also replace the 3.5-inch HDDs found in some desktop PCs. Therefore, this form factor is a direct replacement for users upgrading the HDDs in their computers to faster SSDs.

M.2 and mSATA SSDs are physically smaller and slimmer units. Manufacturers typically use them in ultrathin laptops and tablets. M.2 is the more common form factor. There are different variants of M.2 SSDs differentiated by their sizes and interfaces. Some M.2 units connect to motherboards using SATA interfaces like 2.5-inch and mSATA drives while faster ones slot into the PCIe buses on motherboards.

Consider memory type when comparing SSD drive 1TB drives
Most consumer SSDs write data to a type of nonvolatile flash memory called NAND. There are different NAND flash memories, and the overall performance of an SSD depends on the one used. The major NAND types are triple-level cell (TLC), single-level cell (SLC), multilevel cell (MLC). SLC NAND memory chips store one bit per cell while MLC and TLC ones store two and three bits per cell, respectively. Quad-layer cell (QLC) is a new addition, and it stores four bits per cell.

As the number of bits held in a NAND cell increases, its speed, performance, and write endurance decreases. Therefore, an SLC chip offers the fastest performance and is the most reliable. However, SSDs equipped with MLC, TLC, and QLC chips are more affordable. Consumer SSDs mostly use MLC and TLC NAND memory chips while SLC chips are common in enterprise-grade SSDs.

What is a 3D V-NAND 1TB SSD?
A 3D V-NAND SSD has its memory cells stacked vertically. In contrast, regular NAND memory chips stack cells horizontally. The V-NAND design increases cell density and allows SSDs to store more data without getting physically bigger. Therefore, 3D V-NAND SSDs offer more affordable and higher storage capacities than regular planar NAND SSDs. They also last longer.

What is the difference between SATA and NVMe SSD 1TB drives?
SATA SSD drives use advanced host controller interface (AHCI) controller while some M.2 SSDs have PCIe interfaces that support non-volatile memory express (NVMe). Both AHCI and NVMe are controllers for managing the communication between these storage drives and operating systems. NVMe-PCIe SSDs are significantly faster than SATA AHCI ones, especially when transferring heavy files. Their superior write/read speeds make them excellent for gaming PCs and computers used for editing multimedia files.

What are the benefits of an external SSD drive 1TB?
External SSDs have the same benefits as internal SSDs. They offer high-speed data transfers and are smaller, lighter, and more durable than external HDDs. An external SSD drive 1TB is a portable high-capacity storage that you can take anywhere and use to move large files between computers quickly.
