3M Respirator Face Masks
Trending now
The use of properly worn face masks has been proven effective in preventing wearers from inhaling certain harmful substances and particulates. Staples carries a range of protective equipment for use in these situations, including 3M masks. Read on to learn about the different types of 3M masks for sale.
What Is a 3M Respirator Mask ?
A 3M respirator mask differs greatly from a typical cloth face mask. A 3M mask or respirator is designed to fit securely around the nose and mouth with no gap between the face and mask. This secure fit prevents any opportunity for droplets or particulates to come into contact with the nose or mouth. These masks are created to efficiently filter particulates and resist fluids and are meant for specialized use in high-risk situations, such as providing medical care or while performing certain industrial work. For lower-risk everyday situations, a properly worn disposable or reusable cloth face mask is usually recommended. Note that disposable face masks should only be worn once and then discarded.
How Long Does a Reusable 3M Mask Last?
A reusable 3M mask has a shelf life of five to 10 years when stored in dry, clean conditions away from direct sunlight. Masks should have a manufactured date and a use-by date printed on the packaging and the filter itself that you should refer to before wearing. When wearing reusable 3M face masks, filters should be changed whenever clogged with particulates or when breathing becomes difficult.
What Does N95 Mean for 3M Masks?
Being listed as N95 indicates that the respirator meets the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) N95 classification of air filtration (filters at least 95% of airborne particles). A 3M N95 respirator mask effectively protects against inhaling most particulates but not gases or vapors. Authentic N95 masks are marked with a NIOSH indicator, the N95 filter class and a TC approval number. It should also have headbands instead of earloops.
What Does KN95 Mean for a 3M Mask
Both the N95 and KN95 masks are made to be worn over the mouth and nose and filter out 95% of airborne particles when worn correctly. However, KN95 masks have not been approved by NIOSH, the U.S organization that regulates masks. It has been approved in other countries after rigorous testing, but not in the U.S.
What Is a P95 3M Mask?
The “P” in P95 indicates that the mask is oil proof. P95 masks are approved by NIOSH for 95% filtration effectiveness against oil-based and non-oil-based particulates. These masks are most commonly used in the petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries.
