Copying music, movies, videos, and other files is easy with HP® blank media. You can add small to medium amounts of data to CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray (BD) discs or backup enterprise-size hard drives with a single HP data cartridge. Staples® carries everything you need to copy, create, and backup video, audio, and other vital files.

Consider the Type of HP Blank Media You Need
The two types of blank media are optical discs and data cartridges. Optical disc drives use a low-powered laser beam to read and write data on CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray Discs™. All discs and drives that read and write on them are not universally compatible. For example, you can't use a blank CD in a BD writer drive. A CD-R, DVD-R, and BD-R are recordable. The data you record on these is permanent and you can't overwrite it. For discs that you can reuse, choose CD-RWs, DVD-RWs, or BD-REs. Rewritable discs use a special coating that lets you erase and write over existing data. You can reuse these hundreds of times, but they will start to degrade and lose some of their capacity toward the end of their shelf life. Tape drives use magnetic tape to record data onto blank cartridges. Some brands offer tapes that you can erase and rewrite.

Find the Right HP Blank Media for Your Device
Choose the optical disc speed that matches your recording device. Blank CDs are available at speeds of 2x to 20x. Recordable DVDs come in speeds of 2x to 16x, and BD-Ws have a maximum writing speed of 6x.

Optical discs also have different capacities. You can store only between 650-750 MB of data onto recordable CDs. Single-layer DVDs hold up to 4.7GB and BDs store 25 to 125GB. To backup several hard drives, consider data cartridges. These can hold up to 6.25GB per tape.

What Is Printable HP Blank Media?
This type of media is an excellent choice for creating business media with a company logo or music or movie library. Together with a disc printer, you can transfer words and images directly to any CD, DVD, and BD with a printable surface. Unlike discs that use adhesive labels, these won't wear off, develop air bubbles, or jam disc readers. They also look more professional.

How Many Optical Discs and HP Data Cartridges Come in Package?
Spindles of optical discs come with five to 100 DVDs, CDs, or BDs. Once the disc is full or complete, put it in a case. Jewel cases are clear or in assorted colors and available in packages of 10 to 1,000. Data cartridges come in smaller packs of one to 20 and include cases.

How Should You Store HP Blank Media?
Always store media in a case to protect it from dust, dirt, and water damage. If possible, use the cases in which they came or a similar case specifically for multiple discs and cartridges. Keep them in a cool, dry place that's away from direct sunlight to prevent degradation. You should check for dirt, dust, and smudges before storing optical discs. If they are present, clean them with a soft cloth.
