For the many people who don’t like to lick envelope adhesives, a damp sponge can do the trick. However, it takes time to locate and wet a sponge to the appropriate moisture level to seal envelopes. Self-seal envelopes can help you save time and hassle, especially when you’re mailing multiple documents. Learn more about self-sealing envelopes below.
What Is a Self-Seal Envelope?
Self-seal envelopes, also called peel-and-seal or strip-sealed envelopes, are different from traditional envelopes because they don’t need to be moistened in order to seal, meaning you won’t have to lick the envelope or use other tools (like an envelope moistener) to seal it. Self-seal envelopes have a strip of latex glue on the inner tab that is covered by a strip of paper or plastic. You simply remove the strip covering the adhesive, then close the envelope and gently press on the adhesive area to make sure it's secure. The process is quick, easy and takes the guesswork out of envelope sealing. It’s recommended to get self-seal envelopes with a plastic window so that you can print addresses on the paper you’ll place inside for easy visibility.
What Is the Difference Between Gummed and Self-Seal Envelopes?
Gummed envelopes and self seal envelopes are not the same. Gummed envelopes are another very popular envelope type. They have water-soluble glue on the tab that can be licked or moistened and then pressed to seal. These envelopes are very common and best when using a bulk mailing machine.
How to Store Self-Seal Envelopes
Most self-seal envelopes can last around 12 months before the adhesive begins to degrade. Room temperature can affect shelf life. Avoid storing self-adhesive envelopes in very cold, humid or hot conditions.
Can I Print on a Self-Sealing Envelope?
It is not recommended to run a self-seal envelope through a printer. This is because the protective slip and plastic window could melt from the printer’s heat or become disfigured while running through the machine.
Benefits of Using Self-Adhesive Envelopes
Self-stick envelopes offer a professional look and can prevent tampering. Some have security slits that will tear when the envelope is reopened. Self-sealing envelopes are efficient and time-saving and require no other tools. They’re found in a variety of sizes and can be bought in bulk for a long-lasting supply or to meet heavy mailing demands. Perhaps the biggest benefit, though, is no longer having to use your tongue to seal, which many people dislike due to the adhesive taste and risk of papercuts.
