You may have seen one in your office’s storage closet or collecting dust in your parents’ basement, but did you know that dot matrix printers were once the most common printers for home and office use?

Now, dot matrix printers are mainly used in industrial and commercial settings, but don’t count them out just yet. Inkjet and laser technologies may be the most commonly used printers of this age, but dot matrix printers are still much-needed for the heavy-duty printing you need to get done.

What is a Dot Matrix Printer?

Also known as an “impact matrix printer”, dot matrix printers are a unique printing machine because instead of using ink cartridges, they use a row of pins and ink ribbon to leave impressions on a page. The pins act as high-impact printing heads that strike the printer ribbon and leave a series of dots on paper using a back-and-forth or up-and-down motion, much like how a typewriter operates.

Another interesting difference about the dot matrix printer is that it can’t print specific numbers or characters, only patterns and symbols that go on to look like the numbers and letters you’d want to print.

Staples offers a number of dot matrix printers from well-known manufacturers, including Epson®.

What are Dot Matrix Printers Used For?

Dot matrix printers are primarily used in the industrial and commercial industries because they are uniquely specialized to print on multi-page forms. Multi-page forms, like purchase orders, shipping forms, and event logos, are thicker documents that need to be printed much more often, so they require a printer that is more durable than a standard inkjet or laser printer that would be in a home or office. Additionally, the printer heads strike with enough force to print through up to seven sheets of regular paper and up to five or six layers of continuous-form paper.

Even though dot matrix printers are used in settings you may not come into contact with much, they also pop up in places you’re likely to visit every day. For instance, dot matrix printers are used in retail and banking to print documents and receipts from ATMs, cash registers, and sales terminals.

What are the Advantages of a Dot Matrix Printer?

Dot matrix printers are essential to keeping commercial and industrial businesses running smoothly, but also have other advantages that extend outward from that.

Long-Lasting

Dot matrix printers are workhorses that can last for decades if they are maintained properly. The print head can produce between 300 to 600 million strokes per pin and the ink ribbon can produce up to 10 million characters before needing to be replaced. That roughly breaks down to 2500 single-spaced sheets.

Exceptional Quality

The most important thing to evaluate on a dot matrix printer is the number of pins it has, which can impact the printer’s resolution. A 24-pin dot matrix printer, for example, produces sharper, easier-to-read documents and can last for years without needing to be repaired.

Durable in Challenging Environments

Dot matrix printers are built to withstand anything their environments throw at them, including constant exposure to dust, humidity and warm temperatures. From warehouses to laboratories, this printer can handle it all.

Efficient

These printers are great for manufacturing settings because they don’t need to be constantly monitored. Since they need very limited human interaction to operate, and because they use carbon paper to make multiple copies of documents, you can focus on other tasks.

Cost-Effective

Dot matrix printers are relatively low maintenance as they have minimal electrical parts, which keeps their cost per page low. This is ideal for businesses trying to save or reduce equipment overhead.

Dot matrix printers provide huge value to commercial and industrial offices, and it can do the same for yours as well. Check out our selection below!
