Oscillating floor fans have a pivoting joint with gears that move the fan blade housing back and forth to sweep air throughout a room or space. Depending on the motor and size of the fan blade, an oscillating floor fan can circulate anywhere from 350 to 2000 cubic feet per minute (cfm). Technological innovations have made the fans so quiet that you can fall asleep in a bedroom or converse normally while the fans are powered on. The fans come in pedestal, base, and tower styles.

Pedestal and Base Oscillating Floor Fans
The most powerful oscillating fan is the pedestal style. The fan housing sits on top of a pole that can be height-adjusted to capture the right level of airflow for a room or space. Pedestal floor fans and their oscillating gear housings attach to the top of the pole on a hinged joint with a turn knob. Loosening the knob lets you move the front of the fan blade housing upward or downward to varying degrees to maximize airflow even further. Base floor fans also put out powerful air flow, but sit on a sturdy stand, normally just a foot or so off the floor. They are suitable for moving cooler air near the floor into the entire room or space. Many also have vertical adjustments to maximize air movement.

Tower Oscillating Floor Fans Are Loaded With Features
Tower fans look like a speaker column, 2 to 3 feet in height, with slim elongated profiles that fit in tight corners. The fans are situated at a 90-degree angle to the front of the towers, blowing air out of a grill, sometime louvered for directing airflow more effectively. The right-angle position of the fan blade creates airflow that can reach the perimeters of large areas and rooms. Besides their convenience as space-saving devices, tower oscillating fans have LED-display controls for speed and oscillation on top of the column, within easy, touch-button reach. Many tower fans also have built-in ionizers and humidifying misters to purify and moisten the air.

What Are the Advantages of Oscillating Floor Fans?
With the sweeping 180-degree air movement created by oscillation, these floor fans are able to circulate cooler air than a stationary fan. The broader air circulation also provides a better way to vent areas like home gyms and workshops through windows or ventilation outlets, because the oscillation moves all of the air in the room. The fans maximize the efficiency of air conditioners or heaters, as well.

Can Oscillating Floor Fans Operate at Different Speeds?
Most fans that oscillate also have variable speed controls. Many have three speeds, while more advanced models offer up to 10 air-velocity settings. The majority of fans have either three or five blades, with fan diameters ranging from 10 to 24 inches. The more blades and the wider the blade assembly, the more powerful the airflow produced.

What Other Conveniences Do Oscillating Floor Fans Offer?
Many fans offer remote control operation, so you can turn off the fan while lying in bed or sitting in a chair. Some models also have timers that can be programmed to shut the fan off and turn it on at specific intervals.
