Dual Sensor Smoke Alarm
This First Alert model comes highly recommended by Consumer Reports. They sense both kinds of fires, smoldering and fast moving hot fires. The alarm noise is loud, but not too loud. It definitely gets your attention. It is easy to test monthly.

Doesn't work
I purchased this smoke alarm and it won't stop beeping. Have changed the battery 3x.

So far so good.
They've only been up a couple of days, but so far so good. Long term performance will be the key. Hopefully these will solve the false alarm problems we've had with our hard-wired alarms.

Like most reviewers of these things, I haven't tested it in an actual emergency. And it's brand new.
Effectiveness? Longevity? Don't know yet!
BUT the features are very attractive. Both types of sensors, ionization and photoelectric. Supposedly a new design to reject false alarms.

Smoke detectors arrived quickly and installed quickly
Who knows how they'll react under real fire conditions, but I tested one with some match smoke and it went off as expected. I'm glad I installed the dual sensor units to replace those in my house that were all about 10 years old, the maximum useful lifetime of such units.
From my research, First Alert looks like it has the best product out there for the money.

Makes me feel safe now
These alarms are very loud and they actually picked up smoke from burning bacon within 1 minute. I feel very safe knowing they actually detect so quick.
