Tried cleaning and remounting-did not repair. Ordered replacement and installed; which restored printer to normal printing.

Hi,
I am sorry to read you are having trouble with the printheads. That should not happen. The printheads typically stop working if they are dry. Try to run the printer maintenance option. I would ensure the printhead is clear of any dried ink or dust.
The other cause is that firmware prevented the cartridge from running. Check and revert the most recent update if it happened after you inserted the new cartridge.

Made Printer Like New
After not having my printer available for almost 6 months, I purchased new print heads, installed them, and printer works great - like new again - considering it is 10 years old.

HP 88 print head life span
The one negative thing about this print head is it has a life span of only 18 to 24 months before it stopes working. This goes for both print heads

HP printhead replacement
Print head worked great and helped revive my HP L7780. I also used a syringe and cleaning fluid to clean the ink lines. Printer works like a champ again.

It worked!
I ordered the Cyan/Magenta Printhead as a last ditch effort to bring my L7580 back to life and lo and behold my printer is like new again! Now for a printer that is nearly 10 years old that worked!
