Backing Up Your Files

Backing up files with Mozy is fast, simple, secure and flexible. Backups will not take place unless your computer is turned on and is connected to the Internet. You do not have to be logged in, but your computer cannot be in sleep or hibernation mode.

You can continue to use your computer while your backup is running.

Your initial backup might take a while depending on the volume of data you're backing up and how fast your Internet connection is.

Subsequent backups happen automatically and will take less time.

  • Whether you're performing an initial backup or routine backup, your files are uploaded to Mozy data centers. If you're downloading or restoring files, they are transferred from Mozy data centers directly to your computer.
  • An initial backup could take a while, even up to a few weeks. How long a transfer takes with MozyPro depends on everything from how many files are being transferred and the sizes of those files to how fast your Internet connection is and if your computer busy with other tasks and programs while the transfer is taking place.
  • Before your initial backup, it's a good idea to get a rough estimate of your transfer rate. You can do this by using a bandwidth meter like Speakeasy or Speedtest. Your Internet service provider may offer testing tools you can use, or just search online for other testing tools.
  • After that first backup, routine backups should be pretty quick. To save time, bandwidth and storage space, Mozy only backs up that parts of your files that have changed since the previous time they were backed up, plus any new files selected for backup.
  • You may find that while initially backing up a large amount of files may takes a long time, restoring or downloading them could run a little faster. If a file backup or restore is interrupted for some reason, Mozy will pick up right where it left off.

Initial Backup

Two things will affect just how long your initial backup takes: the amount of data being backed up and how fast your Internet connection is. To speed things up, deselect any files you don't need to back up in the MozyPro Settings (see Selecting Backup Sets). You can always select these files for back up at a later date.

Because Mozy works behind the scenes, you're able to browse the web, send emails and do other tasks that require Internet access.

Which files will get backed up?

MozyPro scans your hard drive and then puts all of your data files into backup sets like word processing documents, digital photos, music files, etc. These are the files that will be backed up.

Note: MozyPro will not backup your operating system, application, or temporary Internet files. These should be restored by reinstalling their software to ensure they are configured correctly with your system. MozyPro also does not back up disk images (.iso), virtual drives (.vmc, .vhd, .vmsn), system configuration and driver files (.sys), and application files (.exe, .dll).

Troubleshooting Settings Issues

If MozyPro settings on your Windows computer are visible but you cannot access them, there are a couple possible solutions:

  1. First, notify Windows to grant you access to these MozyPro settings. For Windows 7 users, click the link for the User Account Control icon in the MozyPro Settings window. For Vista users, click “change settings that are currently unavailable” located in the upper-right part of the MozyPro Settings window. Then, in the Windows Access Control Window, click Trust. The MozyPro Settings window should reload, allowing you to access settings that may have been grayed out previously.
  2. Second, try running MozyPro using a Windows user account with administrative permissions. To learn more, consult the Help function for your Windows operating system.
